On Saturday, October 18, the Friends held a
Climb the Mountain with Jon
event to aid Jon Ruggles, our founding President, who is
undergoing radiation and chemotherapy for throat cancer.
Several hundred people participated in some fashion and
over $3700 was donated to help Jon with his mounting
medical bills. About a dozen hearty individuals completed
Jon's favorite 35 mile route from Wallace (2728') to Mullan
(3250') to Lookout Pass (4725') to Mullan Pass (5168')
and back to Wallace, while scores of folks opted to start
at Lookout Pass and cruise back to Wallace along the old
railroad grade that connects to the
Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes.
Many more folks rode the Trail
to Mullan and back. The spaghetti
feed and benefit raffle was attended by over 250 people, and
would not have been possible without help and donations from
- Affordable Excellence in Physical Therapy
- Alpine Construction
- Bank Street Printing

Further cash donations may be made to the Jon Ruggles
Medical Fund, Bank of America, Osburn, ID 83849. As of
the first week in November, Jon is finally finished
with the radiation treatment, is in the midst of his second
chemotherapy protocol, and is back building houses
4-6 hours a day.
This is a beautiful time of the year for bike riding;
dress in layers, and don't forget to bring water and your camera.
The Trail of the
Coeur d'Alenes is open from Mullan to Plummer,
except for the Chatcolet Bridge over Lake Coeur d'Alene.
Work on this historic swing bridge, mainly painting, should
be completed by the end of November... yes, another delay.
The Grand Opening celebration will be in the spring.
